“Boston Strong” – G&L’s 3rd Birthday

A lot of you might know that I’m from Massachusetts, so you can probably understand that I’ve been glued to the television recently.  The bombing at the marathon and the subsequent shootout and manhunt were hard to avoid, even in Florida.  They were everywhere.  Watching the news teams across half a dozen networks cross-checking with one another, getting things wrong, exaggerating, recanting, apologizing, re-reporting–it was nerve wracking.

Worse?

Waiting on Monday for the phone calls, text messages, and Facebook updates from people that I cared about was agonizing.  But you know what?  It didn’t get easier when I had everyone safe and accounted for.  The people that were affected telling their stories, sharing their fear, and, most of all, helping each other, only made it more important that I stay updated.

When the thousands of photos and video clips flooded the FBI, when people responded and pitched in, and went above and beyond what was called for, I wanted to know more.  I wanted to help.

I’m nowhere near Boston.  I should be, but I’m not.  It’s impossible not to feel helpless when you’re 1500 miles away from the place and people you love in a time like this.  What could I do?  I posted links to the Red Cross on Facebook and urged people to help.

They didn’t need the urging.  Seriously, I’m sure you’ve all seen the reports of people doing everything they could for each other, opening their homes to victims and police officers, feeding and hydrating law enforcement during the manhunt.  It was amazing to me what people will do if given the chance.  Being able to see the good in people in the face of such horror tends to lap at the cynicism in me just a little.

Now, for those of you who don’t think there’s much left to do, that everything is wrapped up and over, you’re wrong.  Those people injured and killed at the marathon are going to have incredible hospital bills, living expenses, and the like.  There’s this charity on InktothePeople.com and there’s one day left to order a “Boston Strong” t-shirt, $15 of the $20 goes to the victims of the marathon bombing.  Ready?

G&L’s three-year anniversary is on Tuesday, and I’m going to ask something of you.  If you’ve ever enjoyed Goggles & Lace, if you still read in spite of my sparse updates, or if you just feel like offering up a random act of charity, order a “Boston Strong” t-shirt.  I would be really moved if any of you ordered one of these t-shirts, a fantastic anniversary gift to G&L.

Be awesome, and pass the link along to others!  There’s one day left!  I already ordered two, one for myself and one for my mother.  I’m excited to be able to wear it around Jacksonville.  Take a lesson from Boston, everyone; it’s only $20.

Thank you all!

Random Update

No featured blog this week, but I will let you all in on some nonsense.

The blogging tribe idea has gotten a very slow start.  We’re all trying to hold onto our enthusiasm, I think.  My work schedule has included far too many 10-our shifts for my liking, so it’s been hard to really kick things into high gear on my end.  In all straight up honesty, I can’t wait to move back to MA.  Firehouse is draining me of anything that brings me even the faintest bit of joy.

On the up side, I plan to be back in Massachusetts by March.  I’m either taking up bartending or hairdressing, I haven’t decided which, but both look like some measure of fun, even if it’s only to find out I’m terrible at one or both.  I need to keep writing, and that’s been a bit of an issue lately.  I’ve been working at some flash fiction pieces that I’ll share soon, as well as some character creation.  In another realm of things, I’m getting myself situated with making candles and beauty products.  My new shop, The Midnight Magpie, will be open online hopefully within the month.

I know, I’ve got my hands in a lot of different pots right now, but I really need to find some measure of happiness in my life before I go completely insane.

On that note, expect a Flash Fiction piece on Wednesday, featuring a new character.  In fact, the next two weeks will feature brand new characters!    Yay!

Okay, enjoy your Monday.

The Tragedy in Newtown, CT

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted here, and after many promises of a better schedule and frequent updates, I’ve let you all down again.  I apologize.

Today, though, I want to address the tragedy in Newtown.  Just briefly.  I’m not going to rail on about gun control or health care.  I’m not  going to tell you that it could have been prevented or that, by some cosmic nonsense, there was a reason for this.

It was senseless violence.  Twenty children, ages 6 and 7, and seven courageous and caring educators were gunned down two days ago by a man who had no business being in that elementary school to begin with.  It was a tragedy.

Twenty families will experience the holidays without their little ones.  Twenty families will have unopened gifts on Christmas morning.  A season that should be filled with joy, love, and charity will now be associated with grief and loss for an entire town, and my heart goes out to them.

That was all I really wanted to say.  I haven’t been able to get that shooting out of my head since I found out about it.  Please keep these people in your thoughts and prayers through the holiday season.

**UPDATE**

On the same day, Dec 14, a man in Beijing, China stabbed 22 children and an adult outside of a primary school.  I just heard about this today, and it sickens me.   Please include the families and victims in China in the above request for thoughts and prayers.  Thank you. <3

Brilliant Ideas & Traveling the World

I know, I’m attacking you all with posts lately.  (Which is how it really should have been from the beginning, only… better posts that mean something. =P)  I promise I’ll be posting better content.

Truthfully, Jade’s IndieGoGo campaign got me thinking that it couldn’t possibly be a better idea to start my own.  See, one of my biggest goals in life was to travel the world, scribbling down my tale (and various fictional tales inspired by my amazing truthful tales) and being a carefree lunatic and empowered woman, doing her own thing abroad!  I’ve been making slow-going plans for almost a year now, but being poor as I am, things fall through, working becomes more important than culturing myself, etc, etc.  All in all, being a “grown up” just gets in the way.

So, I’ve started an IndieGoGo campaign to get the ball rolling.  My plan is to go to England for three months on a working holiday–meaning I get to volunteer on farms, at B&Bs, inns, and in private homes for lodging and food–and write myself brain dead before coming home.  Hopefully coming home more cultured and with broader horizons–and possibly an ebook of my travel journal.

It’s going to be amazing.  So, if you’re inclined to contribute, I would love you forever.  =D  If not, take a look anyway.  Once I get the ball rolling, I’ll be updating a separate travel blog that might snag your interest!

So, a day in the very zany life, I suppose.  =P  Thanks for being here for my projects and whimsical nonsenses.  <3

Kadri, Sewing, and Sundries

A little overview of a new project (probably poorly presented, since I’m freaking exhausted right now), crafts, and possibilities.

There WILL be a Writing Life post on Friday!  I promise I’ll get better at this update thing.  For the last 2 months, I’ve been working six days a week, then I got sick and injured last week.  I just can’t seem to budget my time well, but I’m trying to improve. <3  I hope you all still love me.

I regret to inform you all…

The contest did not receive enough submissions, even with the extended deadline.  I have a few submissions, but I have yet to decide how to handle them.  So, I’m going to talk to the authors over the next day or two and see where they stand.  I really would have liked to have made this fun little publicity project happen, but maybe it just wasn’t G&L’s time.  Maybe for another event….

In other news, I recently sent my pitch for Resurrection Man to Ruby Lioness Press, and my first few chapters and synopsis were requested.  I sent them off last week and I’m waiting (very impatiently and excitedly) to hear back.  Wish me luck.  =]  In the unlikely event that Resurrection Man gets published, there will be an epic post of unintelligible hysteria to follow. <3

In the meantime, I continue to work in food service and as an AVON representative (see the widget in the sidebar *SHAMELSSPLUG*) to fuel my writing career.  O, how we struggle for our art, ladies and gentlemen.

I love you all, and I’ll soon have a new post schedule up for G&L for this summer.  Probably by Sunday.  In the meantime, please respond to the following poll.  Your input is vital to the future and growth of Goggles & Lace!

Announcement & Call for Opinions

Salut!  I’m here for advice this time around instead of being the one to give it.  It’s a nice change of pace when I’m not pretending I know absolutely everything, right?  I feel like maybe this will make me more personable.  =P

No, but seriously.  G&L’s 2 year anniversary is coming up on April 22, and I want to put this out in ample time.  What do you think G&L should do for its 2 year anniversary?  I’m a little torn and kind of frazzled about the whole ordeal.

So, tell me, what should I do to celebrate?  The three best responses will be put into a poll on Febuary 14 (yeah, yeah, Valentine’s Day, I know.  But because I’m a barren old spinster, I’m not observing it) and everyone will be able to take a vote.

So, then, what should G&L do to celebrate two great years on the web?  Don’t be shy!  I love suggestions!

Why am I against SOPA/PIPA?

After I posted my “going dark” notice last night, I received a comment on that post stating how surprised that person was that, as I writer, I could support such a protest.  I want to post my response comment here, so you’re all clear on just why I did.

I can see your perspective, and, not only do I empathize, it’s also a very real concern of mine as I’m trying to make it as a writer. It’s not easy, and we don’t need things like internet piracy making it that much more difficult. So, let me state that I do NOT support internet piracy whatsoever, and “piracy is okay” is ABSOLUTELY not the statement I’m trying to get across here.

The Protect IP Act is designed to block that sort of thing, but only through internet providers. Meaning, download sites will still be available through their IP addresses, which aren’t very difficult to find. It also gives license to companies to sue websites they “feel” aren’t doing their censoring well enough, leading to websites/businesses/and free content to be shut down. One misplaced keyword, and sites that host web comics, free fiction, or free art can be blocked and removed. That would bankrupt dozens of artists and writers just within my own circle. A lot of the content that I support (comics, for instance) are free to access, but they make their money in merchandise and advertising–if they lose their websites, their funding is cut off.

Another thing PIPA allows is the license for government and corporations to fiddle with the registries of the internet itself (domain names and security features), which compromises security on the sites you may be registered to. Most of my advertising and plugging are done through Facebook and Twitter, and that’s really not a comfort to me at all.

Wikipedia would be a huge target. One of the web’s most popular resources for making people smarter is definitely something that I feel needs to stick around. =P

I hope this clarifies things a bit. I really don’t want people to think that, by supporting the blackout, I’m in favor of piracy and illegal downloading. I respect writers and artists and their varying means of obtaining income and building their careers. I just feel that the SOPA/PIPA situation is not the proper way to go about things. I didn’t mean any offense by it.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to comment or email me at gogglesandlace-at-gmail.com.

SOPA/PIPA Blackout

Tomorrow, January 18th, 2012, G&L will black out, along with thousands of other websites, in support of the SOPA blackout.

Not familiar with SOPA/PIPA?  I urge you to check out the link provided.  I will be back on Thursday with the usual-Wednesday Writing Life post.

LfBH in print?

Two posts in one day, I know, I’m flooding you guys!

This is important, though, and it concerns you all, my amazing awesome readers. <3  I have a project in the works in my head, and I need your input.  I’m going to be trying a spiffy self-pubbing venture and I need to know what you think.  Should I edit and revamp LfBH and put that in print, or do you want to see a completely new piece of fiction from me?

I’ll be using IndieGoGo to raise funds to have the project completed and given decent cover art.   This is your chance to see LfBH in hard copy (or something else if you’ve all had enough of LfBH!)

Opinions, please! <3
