Amping Up the Gump

Heya, kids!

Over the last few days, I’ve been working hard at moving into a new place and getting some things on track.  But I’m here now, at least for the month, and I’m settled enough to focus on writing.  Which is necessary, since Wrimos with Gumption has that fabulous June deadline, and I’m not looking to drop caffeine and junk food for a solid thirty days if I don’t make it.

That’s why I’m proposing a couple of challenges.  These challenges welcome everyone, of course, but they’re primarily directed at the Gump.  Feel free to join in, though!

Challenge Number 1: Writing Gump-a-thon!  I’ve had a hard time getting my mojo going lately.  With moving and working and anticipating another move in March, life has been too hectic for writing.  NOT ANYMORE.  Today, I challenge you.  From Wednesday, 6 February 2013, at midnight, I shall hold a write-a-thon!  The write-a-thon shall end on 6 March 2013.  I don’t have any rewards to offer right now, except that if you finish the write-a-thon, your blog/website/shop/book/whatever will be in its own featured post on G&L.

The Rules:

1.  Set your own goal and stick to it.  No flip-flopping.  Pick a word count you want to achieve within the month, and make it happen.  In order to qualify for the featured post, the word count goal must be a minimum of 10,000 words.

2.  The write-a-thon starts at midnight on 6 Feb 2013.  Beginning early will disqualify you from receiving your featured post.  **EDIT**  To clarify, you can use a novel you’ve already started!  You just cannot count anything prior to 6 February.  I apologize for the confusion.**

3.  All word counts must be reported by 6 Mar 2013, 11:59:59 PM.  Late reports will disqualify you from receiving your featured post.

If anyone has any ideas for rules or rewards, feel free to pitch them.  And if any non-Gumpers want to be a part of the community, check us out on Facebook: Wrimos with Gumption: A Beyond NaNoWriMo Challenge.

Challenge Number 2:  Freight-Train-of-Gump Edit-a-Thon!  Coming soon!

Wrimos with Gumption: A Beyond-NaNo Completion Challenge

So, Maria over at mino wrimos and I have decided to create a beyond-NaNo challenge. We’re challenging all of you to complete this novel, from first draft to polished masterpiece, by May 31, 2013. We want to make use of our Create Space codes this year, and, since most of us have issues finishing things, we think this will be fabulous fun for all of us! (AND we’ll have an excuse to keep chat at Write Write and Write going in the off-season!)

Here are the rules:
1. You must have your novel completed by May 31, 2012 to allow for formatting time in the Create Space process.

2. You have to pick something to give up for 30 days, starting June 1, if you fail! Post that in the Facebook group. You HAVE to decide on something to give up BY MAY 1! No welching out come June 1.

3. You have to post regular updates! Whether it’s daily or weekly, whatever, you have to keep us updated. Those of you with blogs/vlogs, broadcast your progress!

Need ideas on what to give up?  Maybe don’t give up anything!  Give up something you love, something that you tend to waste time with (tumblr, a specific food, video games, television, reading, etc.). Or, if you have nothing to give up, consider pledging to do something you’ve been meaning to, dislike, or should be doing. (Educational reading for 15 minutes a night, exercising 20 minutes every morning, cleaning every day, learning a language, starting yoga, etc.) Don’t be afraid to get creative!

So, who’s in?  8D

NaNoWriMo Approacheth!

I’ve been on the 6-day work week for awhile now, and I’m sad to say that my writing has taken a backseat to making a living (which isn’t panning out much, either, really).  Every year I try to make time for writing during NaNoWriMo, and my 5-year-run, with 2 wins and 3 losses, has been a fixture in my creative life.  You all have been with me on that journey for the last two years, and I’ve adored every minute of feedback and commiseration I’ve shared with all of you.

That sounded oddly like a farewell, didn’t it?  Well, it’s not.  NaNo is around the corner, and I’m world building like the universe is about to come to a crashing halt and my ideas are the only thing between us and utter extinction.  I have two whiteboards that are being filled over and over, recorded into notebooks, and transcribed into Scrivener files.  Characters who need fleshing out.  Locations that need to be detailed.

It’s a lot to do in a short amount of time, but you know what?  I always feel so… in my element when I’m plotting for NaNo.  Even now, coming off of another lengthy dry spell, I’m doing much better plotting for NaNo than I have for anything else in the last few months.

I just wanted to send out a reminder that I’m still alive and NaNo is coming, so if you haven’t started plotting– GET ON THAT!  Woo!

Damn it’s good to be home! <3  I’ll race you all to the start of 50k!

Writing Life: On Muses and Writing

Salut, all!  Today’s Writing Life post comes from my fellow writer-friend, Jessi, over at A BA in BS.  We’ve been through a lot together, me and this chick!  We’ve been friends for 13 years, created, hosted, and nurtured a writing group together, and even served as Municipal Liaisons in Massachusetts for NaNoWriMo 2010!  So, enjoy!

+*+*+*+

Inspiration. The ever illusive and always floating around us phantom that seems to slip through our fingers whenever we’re searching for it in earnest. I’m not sure about you, but my muse is a bit of a nudge. She shows herself when she feels it’s appropriate and no other time. I’ve tried coaxing her out. Leave some cookies and a mug of coffee by her door and hope she’ll want to play. I even made the cookies myself… No dice. ‘Fine. I’ll write this without her’, I convince myself and crack my knuckles to sit back and write.

It was a dark and stereotypical night when our hero found himself caught in a rain storm

“Really?” I sigh, delete and try again for the perfect first set of sentences. The truth of the matter is however, it’s not happening. Whether it’s a lack of inspiration or the lack of perfect, non-cliched writing ; the truth is, no quality writing is happening. So what do you or I do in that case?

Take a break

Maybe you’ve been starring at the computer screen for just about as long as you can remember. The hours have ticked by and your poor eyes are weary, dry and less than welcoming to the bright white of the empty page of text. Time to get up. Let the dog out, get a fresh cup of coffee, or go outside to smoke a cigarette. Whatever it is that you do to take your mind and eyes off the computer screen for a five minute break, do it. Sometimes all it takes is a momentary change of environment.

Try a writing exercise

It sounds silly. You’re working on your masterpiece, why would you stray from that? Well for starters, it may give you a new perspective on your hero/heroines current predicament. Also it could give you a new idea for a setting or character design. The point is to get your mind working on something else, and potentially, allowing it to then tangent back to your original, with something completely unexpected in tow.

Music

Ok. I’ll admit. This sounds a little stereotypical but at the same time, stop and give it a thought. How is your character reacting in the scene you’re imagining. Is it high stress? Are they about to valiantly save the love of their life? Are they relaxing by a stream? Where are they located?

Having some sort of soundtrack to your writing can save you in more than one instance. Sometimes listening to your characters theme song (assuming they have one) can trigger memories that you haven’t yet created for them, giving them purpose for being in the scene. Give it a shot, worse comes to worse, it doesn’t work and you’re still here.

Your inspiration comes from…

So where does your inspiration come from? Did you get the idea for the novel through a conversation? A walk in the park? Or did it pop up and become a pile of notes at a coffee shop, scribbled all over napkins? It may sound simple, but revisit that moment. Have a conversation with someone that understands the writing process and it’s inherent quirks. We all have writer friends that see how our brains work even if they don’t quite see through all our gauzy thought processes. Try to relive that moment, or go back through those piles of notes, seeing if something comes back to you, or even spurs on your muse.

So your muse is back or at least on speaking terms with you. Huzzah! The point however, of all of this is to try to gather on the inspiring moments in your life. Try something different and see what happens. I’ve always been a fan of writing to write, even when you’re in the middle of a project. Sometimes those bits of tangent lead you in a direction you never imagined and bring you to brand new conclusions. Even if it’s something you don’t want to use, you’re thinking and bringing your storyline forward.

And then again… there’s always the backspace and delete keys. Nothing is forever, and you can change it all as much as you want. You are all my biggest inspiration. You who keep writing, even knowing that this may all lead to nothing.

Keep it up and tell your muse to stop being such a pain in the tush.

Update from Hell!

I know, I know, I’m awful this month.  Camp NaNoWriMo has completely consumed my soul.  Though, I have to say, it’s  coming into the end of week 2, and I’m still hopelessly in love with my story.  <3

Good news, though!  Next Wednesday, G&L is hosting a bitchin’ guest post by Jessi from A BA in BA!  And it’s going to be spiffy.  Writing Life is happy to have her, so get psyched, people!

Tomorrow is writing exercise day, and I have one planned, so you won’t be entirely without posts this month.  =]

Love you all!  Iamsofreakintired. ._.;

Happy Independence Day – and other less pleasant things

Okay, so a quick, belated “Happy Independence Day” to my American readers. <3   Explosives and excessive amounts of alcohol are the American way.

A brief update on the e-book.  Calibre and I are not getting along.  I’m reformatting everything, and making it into a PDF with Scrivener.  Is that okay with everyone?  Does anyone need a different format?  I’ll do my best to accommodate, but you HAVE to let me know what you need.  I’m not psychic (though that would be pretty freakin’ cool).

AND WHAT IS THIS CASEY ANTHONY GARBAGE!?  I am so seething mad, I can’t even tell you….  So, a neglectful, soulless, lying bitch goes free and an innocent little girl gets no justice.  I’m so disgusted with the verdict of this trial, it’s maddening.  She may get four years with possible time served for lying to investigators.  What the hell do they think she lied for?

I’m not going to go on a rant here.  I just needed to vent a little of my anger.

BUT. I hope you all enjoyed your Independence Day.  I’ll be posting a Writing Life installment tomorrow. <3  For all of you taking part in Camp NaNoWriMo, happy writing!  Good luck!

Backed into a Corner

So, I have a slightly embarrassing confession.  I’ve written myself into a plot tangle with Letters from Blackford Hill….  The way I outlined didn’t leave much room to flesh out the characters and scenarios that I want to flesh out, and I feel that if I leave it the way it is, it’s going to take away from the overall story.  Instead of plowing through it blindly, and risking (more) plot holes, I’ve given myself a solution.

Letters from Blackford Hill will be on hiatus through the month of July.

I sincerely apologize to all my spiffy readers.  With Camp NaNoWriMo on the horizon, and an LfBH  hiatus, it will give me plenty of time to give the storyline the attention it deserves.  ALSO, if you want to voice your opinions on where the storyline should go, July would be the time to do so.  I’ll take suggestions into account, and see if I can implement them into the story.  =]  Don’t be shy.

I won’t leave you with nothing to read from G&L!  Once Camp NaNo gets going, I’ll have a link posted to the spiffy new Glass Dragons website.  My Camp NaNo novel will be posted there, bit by bit, probably once or twice a week.

Follow me on Facebook or Twitter for updates about LfBH and Glass Dragons!

Scrivener for Windows

So, I’m using the beta trial of Scrivener for Windows to set up Glass Dragons, my Camp NaNoWriMo project.  I’ve only had it a couple of days, and I think that it’s going to expire tomorrow (and that’s probably going to kill me), but HOLY COW, HOW did I get along without this software?  It’s so organized and streamlined.  I love it.  I have my character sheets, my setting sketches, my researched webpages, my basic outline, EVERYTHING, all neat and tidy in these folders, under documents.

It has a full screen mode to eliminate distractions!

*Deep breath.*

Okay, I’ve always been against using software as a crutch, but I’m a scatterbrained person.  I’ve tried yWriter and Storybook, but nothing compares to Scrivener.  If you’re working on a long project that requires a lot of organization (and too much crap to remember), this software is invaluable.

Wholly recommended.  Check out Scrivener for Windows!

Little Update

Salut, kids!  I know today is LfBH day, but I’ve been a bit busy.  Camp NaNoWriMo starts in three days, and I’ve been working hard on my project.  It’s currently untitled, but it’s going to be big, much bigger than I’ve written in the past.  In fact, it might even take up the entire two months of Camp NaNoWriMo.  So, here’s a list of what’s going to happen at G&L over the course of July and August:

  • Letters from Blackford Hill and Talion will be bi-weekly, with LfBH posting on July 4th and 18th and August 1st, 15th and 29th, and Talion posting July 9th and 23rd and August 6th and 20th.
  • Wednesdays will still be highlighting Writing Life, probably surrounding Camp NaNo.  We’ll see.  I may bump it to bi-weekly as well, if my project turns into too much to handle.
  • I’ll still be posting writing prompts on Fridays for everyone who isn’t taking part in Camp NaNo.

So, there you have it. <3  LfBH will be late this week.  I’ll post it tomorrow.  If you have any questions, feel free to visit my Contact page and send them my way.

Anyone else taking part in NaNoWriMo’s first-ever summer event?
